      Not long after I had made the transition from fellow to faculty, I got a call in the laboratory from one of my very senior colleagues who needed a favor. An old friend of his had called in a state of extreme agitation. The friend׳s 20-something daughter had been told she needed to be seen for acute leukemia and so he had called my colleague, the only hematologist he knew.
