In 1999, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) introduced
the Outcome Project, which was designed to improve and ensure the quality of graduate
medical education. The Outcome Project introduced 6 core competencies that would allow
the ACGME to evaluate Internal Medicine training programs by measuring outcomes. The
6 core competencies put forward by the ACGME were patient care, medical knowledge,
practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism,
and systems-based practice (www.acgme.org/Outcome/).
