The Perseverance of Medical Education in New Orleans: A Fellow’s Perspective

      In New Orleans the threat of “the big storm” was always present, but most felt that it would never occur. The day before Katrina arrived, my wife was working on the first team disaster call in the Cardiac Care Unit. We had long ago decided that, if one of us was on call, the other would also stay behind. As I was making preparations, she called and said that she was allowed to evacuate. As a family we left New Orleans. Fighting traffic and emotions, we made it to a friend’s house 50 miles north.
