Being involved in the evacuation from New Orleans and subsequent recreation of the
Tulane University School of Medicine in Houston in Fall 2005 were unique experiences
for medical students. Fortunately, this transition did not compromise the quality
of their education, and student performance was unchanged.

However, the school’s return to New Orleans in Summer 2006 was also met with unique
obstacles and unknowns. Although Tulane’s students could never have predicted the
life-changing events that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, their experiences
have permanently and uniquely shaped their medical education. Here, a second-year
medical student and a third-year medical student describe their medical education
